😧😷😍 There will be an automatic extension to Neymar’s contract at Paris St-Germain triggered on July 1 despite doubts about whether the club want to keep him.

😧😷😍 The deal means the Brazilian will have five years left on his contract, taking him to 2027, when he will be 35. He signed a new three-year contract last year, after being persuaded by PSG to stay despite his efforts to return to Barcelona, and it included two additional 12-month extensions, the second of which is triggered next Friday.

😧😷😍 Even so, there have been growing doubts as to whether PSG still want Neymar, although given his salary and the length of his contract it appears highly unlikely that any other club could afford him.

😧😷😍 The doubts over Neymar have irritated his camp, who suspect he is for sale, especially given how PSG pleaded with him to stay last year. From then his relationship with coach Mauricio Pochettino deteriorated, but the former Tottenham manager is set to be replaced by Christophe Galtier.

😧😷😍 In an interview this week, PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi did little to dispel the speculation over Neymar. “We cannot talk about these topics in the media. Some will come and some will leave. But these are private negotiations,” he said, which was taken as hardly a ringing endorsement of the forward.

😧😷😍 PSG are in the process of overhauling their underperforming squad and one of the chief tasks of newly appointed adviser Luis Campos is to try to sell unwanted players once a new coach is brought in.

😧😷😍 The Champions League last-16 defeat by Real Madrid proved a tipping point for Al-Khelaifi, who has already sacked the unpopular sporting director Leonardo and is also consulting with one of his predecessors, Antero Henrique.

😧😷😍 In his interview, Al-Khelaifi also said: “I expected all of the players to do more than last season. Much more. The message is clear: working each day at 200 per cent. To give everything we have for this shirt, to give it our all, and then we’ll see what the result is. We have to become humble again.”

😧😷😍 Neymar, who was signed by PSG in 2018 for a world record fee of €222 million (£200 million) after his release clause at Barcelona was met, is adamant that he is fully committed to the club and wants to stay. However, he came in for criticism because of his performances last season, bearing the brunt of the anger of PSG fans.
